Family friendly event

If you bring your family along - there’s stuff for them to do.

The hill climb will generate a buzz of excitement – it’ll be fun just to be there to see who comes in first! Will it be the KoM, the QoM, or will
cross country skills prevail over the climbers in the end?

The night event will also be exciting – it’s short and intense, and with the live music and bonfires, there’ll be stuff to do. The family
won’t be left standing around for hours twiddling their thumbs.

While you’re out riding on Sunday morning:

  • There’s a playground area at the showground
  • There are a number of historic sites in the local area – check out your search engine
  • Bigger kids can go for a ride – if they’re ok without supervision (your call)
  • Just a short drive away is plenty of shopping, plenty of specialty shops, plenty of coffee shops, plus wineries – check out your search engine
  • Of course they can drive to any of the viewing points and cheer you on.
  • Or they can just sleep in and relax.
First timer friendly event

Have you thought about doing a mountain bike event but felt ‘maybe next time’? The Burning Bike is set up so that you can have a go at each of the best bits of mountain biking without having to commit to a leg- smash-fest or staying up all night and trying to drive home the next day.

The idea here is that while each of the three stages are individually challenging, they aren’t too daunting when put together as a package spread out over two days. It’s an ideal format for a weekend away to test your mountain bike skills, and while it’s true you will need lights for the night lap, the gear you have got now should be fine.

Being on a long weekend it also allows you plenty of time to get home and recover before you need to return to work.

You’ve always wanted to do it – now’s your chance to get a few friends together for a memorable mountain bike experience.

AND – it’ll be around for a while. Be there at the birth of a legendary event.

Info about accommodation & food

Camping

You’ll get a question during the online registration about whether or not you intend to camp.

Your entry fee covers two nights camping at Tarnagulla showground, including use of toilets and (two) showers – the showers cost $1 for three minutes. Bring gold coins!

It will be cold at night – guaranteed.
Dress for warmth.

Bike security

You’ll need to look after your own bike,
and its bits.

Not interested in camping?

There is a caravan park at Tarnagulla which offers some cabins if you can’t bear the idea of a tent. It’s about 300m from the showground. Book early.

There are heaps of B&B’s and similar accommodation in the local area – look them up via your favourite search engine. Just make sure you have enough time to travel to and from there to the race start, remember distances on a country map can be deceptive and double demerits for speeding will apply on the long weekend.

Best of both worlds?

A good option might be to camp out on Saturday night to take full advantage of the bonfire, live music and proximity to the race start, then pack up after the 50k race on Sunday and check in to a B&B for a relaxing Sunday night before making your way home on Monday, relaxed and happy, wearing your new best T-shirt.

Access to food

There will be food to purchase for dinner on Saturday night, breakfast on Sunday, and lunch on Sunday. There’ll be no alcohol for sale at the event, but it’s certainly ok to BYO. Drinking is ok, drunkenness is not.

You can use gas appliances for cooking and heating if you wish, but you can’t have your own camp fire. There’ll be toasty warm bonfires near the pavilion – it’ll be great to mingle with the crowd – you never know who you might meet – this year, next year, and the year after that.

Access to shops - don’t count on it. Tarnagulla has a very small general store and a small pub. Dunolly has most stuff you will need, including petrol. Best to be self sufficient
